Captain Quail 111 - Hatchery (Aug. 26, 2014)

Good news, everyone!

It looks like we will be exhibiting at both APE and Convolution. These are both Bay Area cons, happening at the end of September and beginning of October. Unfortunately, this still means that you have to live in or travel to the Bay Area to buy sweet Captain Quail merch. Hopefully that will change some day.

I confess that I did nothing externally interesting this weekend. I spent almost the entire weekend writing scripts for The Adventures of Captain Quail, trying to get ahead of the cliff I’ve talked about in the past. Getting the work you want done actually done takes more than enough energy to begin with, and there will always be things to get in the way. Being as far ahead as of yourself as possible usually pays off.

The brief amount of time I didn’t spend writing I spent either reading Songs of the Dying Earth, or spending a blissful hour at a local arcade. Songs of the Dying Earth is really, really enthralling. I’ve never read any of Jack Vance’s work (although I’m inspired to now), and picked up the book to read the story by Neil Gaiman. I confess I didn’t like the style originally. I found it too verbose, too grand, too much using fancy words extraneously. But the more I read, the more I realize that the language reflects the world: the Dying Earth is a place where people put incredible importance on manners and appearances, and use language and technology they don’t fully understand. They call it magic.

The more I let go, the more I love it.

Thanks,

Philip
